KHARTOUM, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Sudan's Council of Ministers approved on Thursday a 2019 youth employment plan which is expected to provide job opportunities for more than 160,000 young men and women in the country, Sudan's Ashorooq net reported.

"The plan came within a strategy adopted by the labor ministry to provide wider employment opportunities for the youth," Bahar Idriss Abu Garda, Sudan's labor minister, was quoted as saying.

Further measures would be taken to ensure the transparent and fair implementation of the plan, he added.

On Wednesday, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir declared that 2019 would be a year for the youth.

Since Dec. 19 last year, various areas in Sudan, including the capital Khartoum, have witnessed popular protests over the deteriorating economic conditions and price hikes of basic commodities.

According to government statistics, at least 30 people have been killed during the protests. Enditem
