JAKARTA, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- A shallow earthquake measuring 6.0 magnitude rocked West Sumatra province in western Indonesia on Saturday, but was not potential for tsunami, officials said here.

There was no initial reports of damages or casualty.

The main shock struck at 4:27 p.m. Jakarta time (0927 GMT) with the epicenter at 117 km southeast of Mentawai Island and a depth of 17 km under sea bed, Jajat Jatmika, an official in charge of the meteorology and geophysics agency, told Xinhua by phone.

"Based on our analysis, the quake was not potential to trigger tsunami that we did not issue a warning," Jatmika said.

A 5.3 magnitude foreshock with a depth of 10 km jolted the province 24 minutes earlier, Jatmika added.

The jolts were felt strongly in Sikakap sub-district of Kepulauan Mentawai district, but there were no initial reports of damages or casualty, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of national disaster management agency told Xinhua. Enditem
