Standoff in U.S. state of Ohio leaves one officer dead, another injured

WASHINGTON, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- A standoff that began Saturday evening came to an end Sunday morning in Pierce Township, U.S. state of Ohio, leaving one police officer dead and anther injured.

The Clermont County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the suspect, 23-year-old Wade Edward Winn, was taken into custody at 6:35 a.m. Sunday.

The beginning of the incident occurred at about 7 p.m. Saturday when someone called police for a welfare check.

Two deputies were shot at about 10:30 p.m. that night and the suspect then barricaded himself in an apartment, according to local reports, citing law enforcement officers.

Both officers struck by gunfire were sheriff's deputies in Clermont County, Captain Jeff Sellars with the Sheriff's Office told a press conference on Sunday.

The Sheriff's Office confirmed that 20-year veteran Clermont County Deputy Bill Brewer died and 22-year veteran Lt. Nick DeRose was injured during the standoff.

Brewer died at a local hospital and DeRose was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Sellars added that during the standoff, a fire broke out as a result of the situation.

Pierce Township, in Clermont County, is on the Ohio-Kentucky border, about 30 kilometers southeast of Cincinnati.

The death was the fifth police officer this year to be killed by gunfire, according to ABC News. Enditem
