NEW DELHI, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- India has obtained consular access to 117 of the total 129 students detained in the United States in connection with their "enrollment at the university," and efforts are being made to obtain it for the rest too, said an official statement issued by the country's external affairs ministry on Tuesday.

The Indian ministry's statement said that the government of India continues to closely monitor and take proactive measures to deal with the detention of Indian students enrolled in a fraudulent university in the United States.

Assistance is being extended to the Indian students in obtaining legal advice and connecting them to community support services.

"We remain in touch with the U.S. authorities, both at the federal and local level, to ensure and satisfy ourselves about humane and dignified treatment of the Indian students and custom-sensitive dietary and living arrangement for them during the period of their detention," said the official statement.
