U.S. dollar rises ahead of Trump's State of Union address

NEW YORK, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar rose on Tuesday as investors awaited U.S. President Donald Trump's State of the Union address.

Trump is scheduled to deliver his speech Tuesday evening, during which he is expected to address the country's trade issues with its major trading partners.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, increased 0.23 percent to 96.0661 at 3:00 p.m. (2000 GMT).

In late New York trading, the euro decreased to 1.1409 U.S. dollars from 1.1432 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound was down to 1.2954 dollars from 1.3043 dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar increased to 0.7229 dollar from 0.7224 dollar.

The U.S. dollar bought 109.97 Japanese yen, higher than 109.91 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar was up to 1.0002 Swiss francs from 0.9983 Swiss franc, and it rose to 1.3144 Canadian dollars from 1.3124 Canadian dollars. Enditem
