LUSAKA, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- The following are news highlights in Zambia's major media outlets on Friday.

-- An Ethiopian aviation expert has been appointed as chief executive officer for a joint airline between the Zambian government and Ethiopian Airlines.

Bruk Abebe, who has 24 years in the aviation industry and currently the southern regional director for sales and services at Ethiopian Airlines, has been appointed as chief executive officer of the Zambia Airways which will be launched in the third quarter of this year, according to a statement. -- A Zambian regulator of universities says it will soon embark on a vigorous forensic audit of all higher learning institutions to ascertain their quality of the programs being offered and the qualification of lecturers.

Stephen Simkanga, director-general of the Higher Education Authority, said the continued mushrooming of private universities requires that a forensic be conducted to ensure the quality of education being provided. (Times of Zambia)

-- The Zambian government has called for strengthened partnership between the public and private sectors in developing and marketing the country's wealth to the outside world.

Minister of Finance Margaret Mwanakatwe said strengthened partnerships were vital if the country was to ensure sustained economic development. (Daily Nation)

-- Students from Zambia's public universities have asked the government to rescind its decision to scrap meal allowances for the students as it will have negative consequences on many of them.

The students said in a statement in reaction to an announcement by the government that it has scrapped meal allowances that most students come from poor families and that the move will make many of them fail to progress with their education. (The Mast) Enditem
