ANTARCTICA -- China's 35th Antarctic expedition team on Thursday set up a new automatic meteorological station, some 100 km away from the Zhongshan Station, a Chinese research base in Antarctica.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- At least 10 players were killed and three others injured early Friday morning when a fire swept through a training center at Flamengo football club in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the local fire department said.

MANILA -- A 5.9-magnitude earthquake rattled Surigao del Norte province in the southern Philippines on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The institute said the strong quake, which jolted at 7:55 p.m. local time (1155 GMT), hit 28 km southeast of General Luna, a town in Surigao del Norte, at a depth of 19 km. (Philippines-Earthquake)

DAMASCUS -- A total of seven civilians were killed on Friday when a landmine exploded in central Syria, state news agency SANA reported.
