Egypt takes over rotating chair of African Union

ADDIS ABABA, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Sunday took over the rotating African Union (AU) chairmanship at the opening of the 32nd AU summit of heads of state and government at the AU headquarters in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa.

Al-Sisi has taken over the one-year term chairmanship from President Paul Kagame of Rwanda.

The chairmanship of President Sisi would give a new impetus to ongoing endeavors of the Union in different arenas, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has noted in his opening remarks of the summit.

Sisi will chair the two-day summit held under the theme of the year 2019, "Refugees, Returnees, and Internally Displaced Persons: Towards Durable Solutions to Forced Displacement in Africa."

Issues related to forced displacement and refugees in Africa as well as the ongoing reform of the Union, peace and security are among the top agendas of the summit. Enditem
