LAGOS, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian police said Tuesday it is collaborating with other security agencies to provide a peaceful atmosphere for the smooth conduct of the upcoming elections.

All parties must abide by the rules and regulations guiding the elections, said police spokesperson Godwin Nwobodo while addressing heads of security agencies, leaders of political parties and other critical stakeholders in northern city of Minna.

Nwobodo called on politicians and other stakeholders to abide by the rules and regulations as regards electoral processes in the country.

He said the police and other security agencies were fully ready to ensure the elections are peaceful, free, fair and credible.

Nwobodo said the police would ensure that voters' rights were protected because police and other security agencies were fully prepared to deal with trouble makers.

He was optimistic that the exercise would be successful.

Nigeria will hold general elections on Feb. 16 to elect the country's president and national assembly members, and on March 2 to elect state governors and state legislators. Enditem
