MOSCOW -- Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron agreed during a phone conversation to continue coordination of the two countries in order to facilitate the peace settlement in Syria, the Kremlin said Saturday.

"The parties noted the need to promote the intra-Syrian political dialogue and to launch the work of the Constitutional Committee as soon as possible," a Kremlin statement said. (Russia-France-Syria)

UNITED NATIONS -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday informed the General Assembly of his intention to appoint Inger Andersen of Denmark as the new head of the United Nations Environment Programme, his press office said.

Andersen is currently serving as director-general of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, a post she has held since 2015. She previously held various leadership positions at the World Bank and the United Nations, most recently as World Bank vice president for the Middle East and North Africa. (UN-UNEP-Chief)

ABUJA -- Nigerian police confirmed 11 people including three suspected suicide bombers were killed in an attack in the country's northern state of Borno on Saturday.

CAIRO -- Egypt plans to make its new administrative capital the first cashless city in the country as part of the country's plans to support financial inclusion, Egyptian Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat said on Saturday.

The minister's comment came during his meeting with Michael Froman, vice chairman and president of strategic growth at Mastercard, during which both discussed the company's investment plans in Egypt in the field of electronic government payments and collections.
