DHAKA -- At least eight people were killed as fire engulfed a slum in Bangladesh's southeastern seaport city Chattogram on Sunday, fire service said.

Authorities said the blaze burned some 200 closely packed thatched houses to the ground in the city, some 292 km away from capital Dhaka, rendering several thousand poor people homeless. (Bangladesh-Fire)

MANILA -- Two men were killed and another woman injured when unidentified gunmen aboard a motorcycle fired at a traveling car along EDSA highway in Mandaluyong City of the Philippines on Sunday, authorities said.

According to the police, the white van pulled out of a gasoline station when armed men riding tandem on a black motorcycle pumped bullets at the passenger side of the van around 3:25 p.m.(Philippines-Incident)

JAKARTA -- An investigation by Indonesian national transport safety committee (KNKT) has been launched after a Lion Air passenger plane skidded off runway Saturday at the main airport in Indonesia's West Kalimantan province.

Spokesman of the transport ministry Hengki Angkasawan said Sunday that investigators would find out the cause of the sliding movement of the aircraft which could not be controlled during landing at Supadio airport in Ponianak city. (Indonesia-Lion Air)

TOKYO -- A poll conducted by Kyodo News revealed on Sunday that more than 67 percent of Okinawa residents plan to vote against the Japanese central government's plan to transfer a key U.S. air base within the southern island prefecture in a local referendum scheduled for Feb. 24.

According to the opinion poll conducted over the weekend with 1,047 eligible voters in the prefecture, 67.7 percent said they will vote "no" on the plan while only 15.8 percent said they are in favor of it. (Japan-U.S. Air Base Relocation) Enditem
