BERLIN, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Denis Zakaria's late equalizer secured Borussia Monchengladbach one point on the road at Eintracht Frankfurt at the 22nd round of Bundesliga action on Sunday.

Both sides staged a lively opening period but it was still the visitors who produced the first chances of the game as Thorgan Hazard pulled wide in the 8th minute before scratching the crossbar with a free kick in the 17th.

Frankfurt tried to take over but the hosts lacked in accuracy, while the "Foals" came to their next chance in the 25th minute when unmarked Denis Zakaria missed the target from a promising position.

The "Eagles" reaped their first note-worthy opportunity with 39 minutes played as Filip Kostic's long-range effort forced Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer into action.

However, Sommer was hapless moments later after Danny da Costa broke the deadlock against the run of the play from very close range in the dying seconds of the first half.

After the restart, Frankfurt retracted with the narrow lead behind and focused on counterattacks, while Monchengladbach increased the pressure but neither Patrick Herrmann nor Oscar Wendt were able to overcome goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.

As the match progressed, Monchengladbach's efforts gradually faded away before they scored the equalizer out of the blue in the closing period when Denis Zakaria capitalized on a through ball to beat Trapp with a low shot.

Dieter Hecking's men had even the chance to grab the winner but Josip Drmic's effort missed the target just wide.

With the result, Borussia Monchengladbach remain in 3rd place of the standings, while Eintracht Frankfurt's hopes for a place in Europe suffered a setback after slipping to the 7th position.

Elsewhere, Bayer Leverkusen secured their second straight victory after beating newly promoted Fortuna Dusseldorf 2-0 on goals from Kai Havertz and Leon Bailey.

The victory lifted Leverkusen into the top five while Dusseldorf continue on the 12th position.

Front runners Borussia Dortmund clash with newly promoted bottom side Nuremberg to conclude the 22nd round on Monday. Enditem
