ATHENS, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- One in two Greek taxpayers, namely 4 million individuals and enterprises, owe a total of 104.36 billion euros (118.3 billion U.S dollars) to the tax office, according to a report by the country's revenue agency, the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (IAPR).

About 2.2 million taxpayers owe up to 500 euros each and 1.5 million taxpayers have arrears up to 10,000 euros each, Greek news website in.gr reported on Wednesday, citing the official data.

Some 8,000 taxpayers (mainly companies) owe over one million euros each.

The number of Greek taxpayers who do not meet their obligations to the tax office in time has increased since the start of the debt crisis.

In December 2010 approximately 1.1 million taxpayers owed a total of 38.3 billion euros, while in January 2019 the number had soared to 4 million.

According to IAPR's data, during 2018 authorities seized deposits from about 120,000 bank accounts for debts to the tax office, raising 5.5 billion euros.

On average Greek tax authorities proceed to 19 confiscations per hour, according to IAPR's statistics. (1 euro= 1.13 U.S dollars) Enditem
