BANGKOK, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Thai police on Thursday stepped up security and sealed off a buddhist temple which was attacked by insurgents in the southern province of Pattani on Wednesday.

The temple was hit by gunshots from unidentified insurgents on motors for at least 10 times, police said.

Five monks were living in the temple and no one was injured. Some buildings were destroyed. The bullets also hit two rubber trees in the temple's compound, police said, adding that the insurgents might aim to create disturbance in the country's south.

Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala are the three southernmost provinces haunted by an ongoing conflict involving gunshots and bomb attacks. Enditem
