DAMASCUS, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- A car bomb went off Thursday in a town controlled by the Kurdish fighters in eastern Syria, killing and wounding tens of people, Kurdish activists said.

The car bomb exploded in the town of Shehel in the eastern countryside of Deir al-Zour province, according to the War Media of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Meanwhile, the Qatari-based Al Jazeera TV said 15 people were killed in the blast.

This comes as the last Islamic State (IS) militants and their families were planned to evacuate their last area in the eastern Euphrates River region in the eastern countryside of Deir al-Zour.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said the 260 IS militants are still located in the farmland of the town of Bagouz as tens of civilians are set to leave the area in accordance with an undeclared deal between the SDF and IS.

The SDF has been backed by the U.S.-led coalition in their push to drive out IS from eastern Syria close to the Iraqi border.

Many of the IS militants who are still positioned in that part of the country are foreign nationals.

The evacuation of IS militants and their families from eastern Syria has been dragging on recently amid no exact information about their destination. Enditem
