BANGKOK, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- A woman and her daughter were killed when their car was hit by a sprinter train at an unguarded crossing in southern Thailand's Surat Thani Province on Saturday.

The accident happened on Saturday morning when the woman, 34, was taking her two daughters to tutoring class. It was believed that she did not notice the oncoming Yala-bound train when she drove pass the crossing without any barrier.

Her vehicle was hit by the train and was badly damaged, being pushed 50 meters away from the tracks by the force of the crash.

The woman and her seven-year-old daughter was pronounced dead at the hospital, while her other daughter, 4, suffered serious head injuries.

The Bangkok-Yala train was damaged in its locomotive.

The woman's husband urged the state railway body to put up a barrier at the crossing, where dense grass for cattle is planted.

Surat Thani governor said he had ordered officials to clear trees and grass along the crossing to improve visibility for people using the route.

There are a total of 2,690 crossings between roads and railway stations in Thailand, among which 699 are without any barriers, according to statistics from the State Railway of Thailand.
