NICOSIA, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- The British government will be with Cyprus and the European Union for a deal on the operation of its Sovereign Bases on the eastern Mediterranean island, Cypriot media reported on Monday, citing a spokesman of 10 Downing Street.

"The agreement will allow Cypriot citizens who live and work there to carry on doing so without any problems," Cyprus News Agency quoted the spokesman as saying.

The smooth continuation of the bases' operation and of the daily lives of people living and working in those areas has been set out in a protocol that forms part of the UK's Withdrawal Agreement with the EU.

However, in the event of an unregulated Brexit the protocol concerning the British Bases in Cyprus as well as the protocols on Northern Ireland and Gibraltar- will not by applied, creating uncertainties on the status of European citizens living on what is technically British soil.

"Whether there is a deal or not, the government has been clear that we stand ready to work with the Republic of Cyprus to minimize any disruption to people, businesses and the effectiveness of the military bases," the British government spokesman told Cyprus News Agency.

The agency also quoted a diplomatic source in London as saying that the assumption has been that the British Bases issue will be rather easier to resolve in a "no deal" scenario than the rest of the arrangements that will be required. Enditem
