RIGA, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- With three months remaining to the European Parliament elections, Latvia's left-wing Harmony party has changed its plans and decided to field Riga Mayor Nils Usakovs as its candidate number one in the polls, Latvian public television reported Monday.
Former Riga vice mayor Andris Ameriks, who leads the regional Honor to Serve Riga party, will also run in the forthcoming European Parliament elections on the Harmony ticket as candidate number two.
MP Vjaceslavs Dombrovskis will probably withdraw from the race.
Harmony is expected to approve its new list of candidates for the European Parliament elections already this week.
Both Usakovs and Ameriks decided to contest seats in the EU legislature last weekend, according to the TV report.
Like voters in other European Union countries, Latvia will elect its eight representatives to the European Parliament on May 25.
The decision of Usakovs and Ameriks to run in this year's European Parliament elections comes at a time when Latvia's law enforcement authorities are conducting a major corruption probe in Riga's municipal transport company Rigas Satiksme. Enditem
