World Health Organization condemns attacks on healthcare in Libya

TRIPOLI, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday condemned an attack on a medical facility in southern Libya.
An armed man assaulted a WHO psychiatrist a few days ago inside a mental health facility in the southern city of Sabha, the organization said in a statement.
"The WHO urges all parties in the conflict in Libya to respect the safety and neutrality of the health workers and health facilities. Incidents like this can and should be avoided as obligated by human rights law," the statement said.
Libya has been suffering escalating violence and chaos since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
Libyan authorities struggle to provide basic services for the people, mainly health care and education, amid armed conflict and economic instability.
According to the WHO, dozens of attacks against medical workers and facilities have been registered in Libya in 2018 and 2019, including six health workers and patients were killed and 35 others injured. Enditem
