RIO DE JANEIRO -- Two trains collided in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday, killing one driver and injuring eight others, said local authorities.

DAMASCUS -- A Syrian-Russian joint coordination committee demanded in a statement Wednesday the U.S. forces to withdraw from Syria, according to Syrian state news agency SANA.

BAGHDAD -- Two villagers were killed and four wounded Wednesday in a mortar shelling on a village in Iraq's eastern province of Diyala, a provincial police source said.

A barrage of mortar rounds landed on houses in al-Jadida Village in south of the provincial capital Baquba, which is located some 65 km northeast of Baghdad, Major Alaa al-Saadi, from Diyala's police command, told Xinhua. (Iraq-Mortar Shelling-Death)

UNITED NATIONS -- The UN Security Council on Wednesday adopted a resolution expressing its readiness to contribute to the African Union's pledge to "end all wars in Africa by 2020" and "achieve the goal of a conflict-free Africa".

Noting that Africa still faces enormous challenges, the resolution 2457 acknowledges that the building of a conflict-free Africa essentially rests on the African Union, its member states, their people and their institutions, including their civil society. (UN-Africa-Resolution) Enditem
