LUSAKA, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Wednesday received a report on the political situation in Lesotho from a committee that is overseeing reforms in the tiny southern African nation.

Lungu, as chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defense and Security Cooperation, received the report on the current status from Chairperson of the Oversight Committee, retired Chief Justice Mathew Ngulube, during a ceremony at State House, according to state-run news agency, the Zambia News and Information Service.

Lungu appointed the retired chief justice as chairperson of the Oversight Committee last September to help him in implementation of a reform road map for Lesotho which has experienced political tension.

In remarks after receiving the report, the Zambian leader said he will support the committee with enhanced concerted efforts towards the peace process in Lesotho.

He said he will also engage the SADC secretariat on some of the issues raised in the report in an effort to ensure that the peace process was achieved in Lesotho.

On his part, the retired chief judge said the committee has recorded tremendous progress in rendering assistance in the reforms and the political stability process in Lesotho.

He however said there was need for the committee to extend its stay in order to complete its work.

"We have made great progress but appeal to extend our presence in Lesotho because this is not the time for us to pull out yet," he said.

The SADC Oversight Committee is in Lesotho to also serve as an early warning mechanism. Enditem
