Suarez, Cavani named in Uruguay squad for China Cup

MONTEVIDEO, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Barcelona striker Luis Suarez and Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani have been included in Uruguay's preliminary squad for this month's China Cup.

Atletico Madrid defenders Diego Godin and Jose Maria Gimenez and Juventus pair Martin Caceres and Rodrigo Bentancur were also named on the Celeste's 27-man list for the friendly tournament.

In addition, there was a place for uncapped full-back Giovanni Gonzalez, who has impressed coach Oscar Tabarez with his form for local club Penarol.

The South American team will face Uzbekistan on March 22 and either Thailand or hosts China three days later.

Uruguay won last year's edition of the China Cup by defeating Wales 1-0 in the final courtesy of a goal from Cavani.

Uruguay squad:

Goalkeepers: Fernando Muslera (Galatasaray), Martin Silva (Libertad), Martin Campana (Independiente).

Defenders: Diego Godin (Atletico Madrid), Sebastian Coates (Sporting Lisbon), Jose Maria Gimenez (Atletico Madrid), Giovanni Gonzalez (Penarol), Gaston Silva (Independiente), Martin Caceres (Juventus), Mathias Suarez (Montpellier), Marcelo Saracchi (Leipzig).

Midfielders: Diego Laxalt (Milan), Nahitan Nandez (Boca Juniors), Lucas Torreira (Arsenal), Matias Vecino (Inter Milan), Rodrigo Bentancur (Juventus), Carlos Sanchez (Santos), Nicolas Lodeiro (Seattle Sounders), Camilo Mayada (River Plate), Federico Valverde (Real Madrid), Giorgian de Arrascaeta (Flamengo), Gaston Pereiro (PSV).

Strikers: Jonathan Rodriguez (Cruz Azul), Maximiliano Gomez (Celta de Vigo), Cristian Stuani (Girona), Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint Germain), Luis Suarez (Barcelona).
