MOGADISHU, March 2 (Xinhua) -- The African Union top envoy in Somalia on Saturday condemned Thursday's terrorist attack on a hotel in the capital Mogadishu that left at least 36 people dead and more than 60 others injured.

Francisco Madeira, special representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for Somalia said the attack on Hotel Makkah Al-Mukaramah and other nearby businesses by al-Shabab is another proof that the militants have no respect for human rights or regard for the sanctity of human life.

"Their selfish aim is to scuttle the progress so far achieved by the federal and state governments and their development partners in stabilizing Somalia," Madeira said in a statement issued in Mogadishu.

The AU envoy expressed solidarity with the government and sent his condolences to the bereaved families. He prayed for the quick recovery of those who sustained injuries. Enditem
