MANILA -- An earthquake of 6.4 magnitude struck off Surigao del Norte province in the southern Philippines on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The institute said the quake, which struck at 11:06 p.m., hit at a depth of 16 kilometers, about 41 km northeast of Burgos town in Surigao del Norte. (Philippines-Earthquake)

NEW DELHI -- An Indian Air Force's (IAF) MiG-21 Bison aircraft crashed Friday in the western state of Rajasthan, and bird hit might be the cause.

An official statement issued by the IAF said that the aircraft took off from Nal Airforce Station for a routine sortie, and crashed near the city of Bikaner. The crash occurred at around 14:30 local time, and the pilot ejected safely. (India-Aircraft crash)

SUVA -- Fiji's Parliament Speaker Ratu Epeli Nailatikau hailed on Friday the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), saying that many countries will benefit from this great initiative.

"China's Belt and Road Initiative is a great initiative, and it is going to benefit so many countries, including the Pacific Island nations," Nailatikau told Xinhua while attending the official opening of the China-renovated media gallery in the Fijian parliament. (Fiji-China-Belt and Road)

SEOUL -- South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Friday named seven new ministers, including a top policymaker in charge of inter-Korean affairs, in a cabinet reshuffle for the third year of his five-year presidency, according to the presidential Blue House.

Kim Yeon-chul, the current chief of the state-run Korea Institute for National Unification, was nominated to replace Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon, Blue House spokesman Kim Eui-keum told a press briefing. (South Korea-New ministers)

COLOMBO -- Sri Lanka's Transport and Civil Aviation Ministry on Friday launched special "all female compartments" in passenger trains travelling throughout the island in order to ensure the safety of female passengers, local media said.

The additional compartments were unveiled Friday morning on the occasion of International Women's Day on local trains including Sagarika, Samuddra Devi, Maho, Bangadeniya, Rambukkana and Fowzie which travel throughout the country. (Sri Lanka-All female train compartments) Enditem
