BERLIN, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Schalke have sacked head coach Domenico Tedesco due to poor performances, the "Royal Blues" confirmed in an official statement on Thursday.

The 33-year-old coach and his assistants have been released from all his duties with immediate effect.

"In the past season he was able to initiate a very positive development and finish the season on the 2nd place of the standings. However, in this season the development is negative. Domenico Tedesco deserves our thanks to the work he has done in the past two years," Schalke's sporting director Jochen Schneider said.

Tedesco took the reins at Schalke in the summer 2017 and secured the club a runner-up finish.

However, in the current season things look quite different as Schalke got stuck in the relegation battle after slumping to the 14th place of the table.

To make things worse, Schalke got whitewashed in UEFA Champions League's second leg of the last 16 as Manchester City won 7-0 on home soil to seal Tedesco's end. It is the highest defeat of a German team in the Champions League history.

For now, Huub Steven will take the helm as a caretaker along with Mike Buskens, who will be Steven's assistant.

Schalke encounter third-placed Leipzig at the 26th round in Bundesliga on Saturday. Enditem
