BEIJING -- China's major stock indices rose Thursday, with shares of the communication services sector and industrial hemp related companies surging.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.35 percent and broke through 3,100 points to finish at 3,101.46. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.71 percent higher at 9,869.80.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore shares closed 0.19 percent higher on Thursday after U.S. Federal Reserve struck a dovish stance on monetary policy overnight.

The U.S. central bank signaled it would not raise rates this year. U.S. markets enjoyed a brief recovery before fading by close on Wednesday as weakness in the financial counters dragged the broader markets.

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Thursday moved up 6.38 points, or 0.39 percent to close at 1,634.00 points.

Some 12.44 billion shares worth 39.63 billion baht (about 1.26 billion U.S. dollars) changed hands.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended lower here on Thursday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,663.66 down 20.55 points or 1.22 percent, and the Emas was at 11,654.51 down 105.75 points or 0.90 percent.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 249.41 points, or 0.85 percent, to 29,071.56 points on Thursday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 29,051.85 and 29,446.77. Turnover totaled 114.03 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 14.53 billion U.S. dollars).

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 1.23 percent higher on Thursday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 96.52 points to 7,954.72. The all-share index went up by 41.30 points, or 0.85 percent, to 4,888.79.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher Thursday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) gained 7.78 points, or 0.36 percent, to settle at 2,184.88. Trading volume stood at 337 million shares worth 6.1 trillion won (5.4 billion U.S. dollars).

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market recovered from an afternoon slump to finish modestly higher on Thursday.

At the market close, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was up 1.90 points or 0.031 percent at 6,167.20, while the broader All Ordinaries index was up 1.70 points or 0.027 percent at 6,253.50. Enditem
