BANGKOK, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's Department of Fisheries on Friday said that all commercial fishing in the Gulf of Thailand would be banned from June to July.

Department of Fisheries Director-General Joompol Sanguansin said the inner area of the Gulf of Thailand would be closed to all commercial fishing beginning today.

Joompol also said that many fishermen had been using various sorts of modified marine tools that enable them to catch practically all types of marine life in the sea, leaving none to breed.

He said the ban in fishing at the Gulf of Thailand is due to the dwindling number of marine life caused by increasing fishing activities.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives had enforced the ban in eight provinces around the Gulf of Thailand from June to July each year until 2018.

The ban is expected to increase the number of fish and other types of marine life in the sea. Enditem
