TRIPOLI, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Nearly half a million internally displaced people (IDPs) who have returned to their homes in Libya are in need of humanitarian assistance, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said Monday.

"Currently in Libya, there are over 445,000 returnees that are in need of humanitarian assistance," UNHCR said.

Many Libyan families are living in areas surrounded by unexploded remnants of war near their destroyed homes, UNHCR added.

Several Libyan cities have been affected by years of armed conflict, while authorities are struggling to provide basic services for the people, mainly proper education and healthcare.

In February, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and the Libyan government launched a 202-million-U.S.-dollar humanitarian response plan for more than half a million people in the country to meet their urgent humanitarian needs, including healthcare, water and education. Enditem
