BEIJING -- Chinese stocks rallied on Wednesday, led by shares related to the Shanghai pilot free trade zone and brokerages.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index jumped 1.24 percent to 3,216.3 points, reaching its highest level since May 2018. The Shenzhen Component Index climbed 0.78 percent to 10,340.51 points.

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed lower Wednesday. Benchmark indices ended near day's low after Skymet predicted below-normal monsoon due to developing El Nino.

All the sectoral indices ended in red led by PSU bank (down 2.5 percent) followed by pharma, infra, energy, IT, metal, auto and FMCG.

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Wednesday moved down 2.42 points, or 0.15 percent to close at 1,649.06 points.

Some 14.50 billion shares worth 44.25 billion baht (about 1.40 billion U.S. dollars) changed hands.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) going up 0.96 percent, or 31.49 points, to close at 3,311.27.

A total of 1.83 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 1.42 billion Singapore dollars (about 1.05 billion U.S. dollars). Gainers outnumbered losers by 245 to 190.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Wednesday as trade talks between China and the United States were set to resume in Washington on Wednesday.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 07.90 points, or 0.97 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 21,713.21.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended higher here on Wednesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,643.21 up 10.38 points or 0.64 percent, and the Emas was at 11,585.04 up 74.00 points or 0.64 percent.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh City bourse in southern Vietnam, closed at 984.46 points on Wednesday, down 1.35 points, or 0.14 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

Over 216.942 million shares worth 4.363 trillion Vietnamese dong (189.7 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange, with prices of 140 stocks rising, 159 stocks decreasing, and 82 stocks remaining unchanged.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 107.3 points on Wednesday, down 0.19 points or 0.17 percent from the previous trading session.

Nearly 39 million shares worth 612.9 billion Vietnamese dong (26.6 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Wednesday. Specifically, foreign investors bought over 1.7 million shares valued at 35.9 billion Vietnamese dong (1.6 million U.S. dollars), and sold more than 1 million shares valued at 15.6 billion Vietnamese dong (677,826 U.S. dollars).

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed up 361.72 points, or 1.22 percent, to 29,986.39 points on Wednesday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 29,715.77 and 29,999.34. Turnover totaled 122.59 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 15.62 billion U.S. dollars).

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market closed on Wednesday with a decrease of 0.39 percent compared to the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index decreased by 3.19 points, reaching 811.92 points after closing.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) gained 26.09 points, or 1.20 percent, to settle at 2,203.27. Trading volume stood at 344.3 million shares worth 5.1 trillion won (4.5 billion U.S. dollars).

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand stock market decreased 0.19 percent on Wednesday.

The S&P/NZX 50 Index opened on Wednesday at 9,929.18, down 0.3 percent, while closed at 9,939.26, 0.25 percent lower than previous day.

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market lifted on Wednesday, hitting a seven-month high thanks to broad gains across almost all sectors.
