CAPE TOWN, April 5 (Xinhua) -- The following are news highlights in South African major news outlets on Friday.

-- Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba on Thursday challenged President Cyril Ramaphosa to accompany him to Alexandra, a blacktownship in Johannesburg, where protests over poor service delivery broke out on Wednesday.

This followed the president's call for him to address angry Alexandra residents.(News24)

-- National leaders of the South African Municipal Workers' Union (SAMWU) were shown the door by delegates at a central committee meeting taking place in Bloemfontein, Free State Province on Thursday.

In a vote of no confidence motion, five provinces voted to get the leaders of the country's biggest municipal trade union removed from office. Three other provinces opposed the motion, while one abstained.(Eyewitness News)
