KAMPALA, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Uganda hosted Africa's first World Table Tennis Day main celebration on Saturday, intending to harness the power of the game as a vehicle for positive social action.

The celebration kicked off here with a march by several schools and clubs to Nsambya Sharing Youth Centre.

At the celebration, the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) launched the Slum Ping Pong Program, which will use table tennis as a tool to provide 100 children with access to education by integrating them into schools.

"I am happy to be in Uganda to launch this program, which I am sure will see the game develop and players getting educated at the same time," said Leandro Olvech, ITTF Foundation Director.

There was also an exhibition, drama and table tennis inspirational games.

Egyptian Ibrahim Hamato who lost both his arms in a train accident when he was 10 years old, played table tennis with the racket in his mouth in some exhibition matches. Enditem
