KHARTOUM, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Sunday chaired a meeting of the Defence and National Security Council, according to Sudanese Presidency.

The council stressed the importance of "uniting the national rank, achieving peace and resorting to wisdom" to prevent the country from sedition, it said.

It added that the council reviewed detailed reports on the current political and security situations and adopted a number of measures that are likely to enhance peace and security in the country.

The council, meanwhile, stressed that the protesters represent a category of society that its vision and demands must be heard, reiterating the government's keenness to continue dialogue with all parties to achieve national consensus.

Since Dec. 19 last year, Sudan has been witnessing popular protests over the deteriorating economic conditions and price hikes of basic commodities. Enditem
