KUWAIT CITY, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Kuwait launched a cholera vaccination campaign in Taiz Province, south of Yemen, to combat outbreak of the disease, the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) announced Saturday.

Maha Al-Barjas, KRCS's secretary general, said the campaign includes provision of hygiene facilities, vaccines and medicines along with field training courses for local health supervisors and volunteers in Jabal Habashy District of Taiz.

These efforts are aimed at alleviating the suffering of the people and combating the contagious disease, she added.

The health sector is one of the most severely affected sectors by the conflict in Yemen, which allowed the spread of cholera and other infectious diseases such as dengue fever, Al-Barjas noted.

The deadly disease of cholera has hit most of the villages in Taiz in a "frightening manner," she noted.

The cholera epidemic has been spreading in Yemen since October 2016, but the number of cholera cases resurged after April 2017 as the country's sewer system stopped working because of war.

The epidemic in Yemen has set the world's highest record with the infection of 1 million people and over 2,000 have been confirmed dead since 2017, according to the World Health Organization. Enditem
