BUDAPEST, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Close to one million people visited famous spas of the Hungarian capital in the first three months of 2019, official figures showed on Wednesday.

"Budapest spas had a total 980,000 visitors in the first quarter of the year, an increase of 67,500 compared with the same period in 2018," the website of the Hungarian government revealed in a statement.

"The number of visitors increased year on year 7.4 percent, whereas net sales were up by 18.9 percent," according to the statement.

The world famous Budapest spas have seen record visitor numbers for the second year running, the statement added.

The first records of thermal baths in the Budapest region go back to the era of the ancient Roman empire, when the Aquincum garrison of the Pannonia province had a total of 18 such facilities. Even the name Aquincum means "five waters".

Budapest currently has eight thermal baths, three of which are also historical monuments. The most popular with tourists is the Szechenyi Spa, located in the capital's central park. It was built in 1913 in Neo-Baroque style. It has three outdoor and 15 indoor pools. Enditem
