DHAKA, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Muslims in Bangladesh observed the holy Shab-e-Barat, the night of fortune and forgiveness, Sunday night amid unprecedented tight security.

Muslims gathered at different mosques in Dhaka where special prayers and sermons were held.

On Shab-e-Barat night, most of the Muslims here attempt to stay awake in prayer as much as possible.

The government has declared April 22 as a public holiday as the holy Shab-e-Barat will be observed on the night of April 21 when people also visit graveyards and pray for their dear ones.

Shab-e-Barat falls on the 15th of the Islamic month of Shaban.

On the occasion, Bangladesh Muslims distribute sweets and homemade foods among the poor, their neighbors, friends and relatives.

In the wake of the deadly blasts in Sri Lanka on Sunday, authorities have taken unprecedented security measures for peaceful observance of the holy night, with the deployment of additional Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police members.

Md Sohel Rana, a senior official at the police headquarters, said in a message that security measures were tightened for Shab-e-Barat and Easter Sunday though there was no threat of sabotage. Enditem
