AYBAK, Afghanistan -- About eight laborers died of suffocation at a coal mine pit in Afghanistan's northern province of Samangan on Sunday, a local official said Monday.

The laborers were working at the coal mine in Dara-i-Suf-i-Bala, west of provincial capital Aybak, when a poisonous gas leaked and accumulated, suffocating them to death late on Sunday, head of provincial council Raz Mohammad told Xinhua. (Afghanistan-Coal Mine-Suffocation)

COLOMBO -- The death toll from the multiple explosions which shook Sri Lanka on Sunday has risen to 290, while over 500 have been injured, the police said Monday.

NEW DELHI -- At least seven people were killed and 10 others injured in a stampede during a Hindu temple ceremony in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, police said Monday.

GHAZNI, Afghanistan -- Nine militants were killed and 10 detainees have been released after the Afghan security forces stormed a Taliban hideout in Qarabagh district of the eastern Ghazni province on Monday, Aref Nuri the spokesman for provincial government said.

The security forces targeted a Taliban hideout in Fatihullah village of Qarabagh district early Monday morning and set free 10 persons who had been kept by the Taliban militants illegally in a container, the official added. (Afghanistan-Taliban-Detainee) Enditem
