BANGKOK, April 25 (Xinhua) -- About 3,000 passengers were stranded and more than 18 flights were affected when an international airport in Bangkok was hit by an unprecedented storm on Thursday.

Strong winds and hailstorm battered the Don Mueang Airport sitting in the north of the Thai capital on Thursday afternoon, forcing at least one flight to re-direct to the nearby airport and causing an air stair to hit a aircraft.

Many flights were disrupted between 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. local time. Dozens of planes have to be parked waiting for the right time to take off while others hovered nearly waiting to land.

Thailand's meteorology department forecast that a new round of summer storms is coming to hit upper Thailand after two people, including a 4-year-old girl, were killed by the severe weather in the past few days.

The department said that the northeast and east will be the first to see the powerful thunderstorms, torrential rain, gusty winds and hailstorms which are expected from Friday through Sunday. Those regions will be followed by north and central Thailand, including parts of metropolitan Bangkok. Enditem
