KABUL -- Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani stressed achieving viable peace in his militancy-battered country through dialogue in the much-awaited consultative Loya Jirga or traditional grand assembly of elders and chieftains inaugurated here on Monday.

"I want to have lasting peace in Afghanistan and not the loose and shaky one. I am calling upon you people to define the peace talks and guide on how to talks with the Taliban and achieve viable peace," Ghani said at the gathering. (Afghanistan-Loya Jirga-Peace)

JAKARTA -- The death toll from floods and landslides in Indonesia's western Bengkulu province and the capital of Jakarta jumped to 31 on Monday, while the search for 13 missing people was underway, disaster agency officials said.

Floods and landslides have struck Bengkulu province since Friday, although the water have receded, but disaster agency official warned people to exercise caution as further torrential rains are expected. WASHINGTON -- At least one person was killed and seven others injured in a shooting in Baltimore in the U.S. state of Maryland on Sunday afternoon, the authorities confirmed.
