KHARTOUM, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Sudan's acting Attorney General Al-Waleed Sid-Ahmed Mahmoud on Thursday ordered the judiciary to question ousted president Omar al-Bashir on charges of money laundering and financing terrorism, the Justice Ministry said.
"Acting Attorney General Al-Waleed Sid-Ahmed Mahmoud on Thursday directed to question former President Omar Hassan Ahmed al-Bashir in the criminal suit under article 6/1 of dealing in foreign currency act and article 15 of Anti-Money Laundering and the Financing of Terrorism Act," the ministry said in a statement.
Mahmoud also directed the ministry to start investigating the suspected financial transactions of former officials.
On Wednesday, the attorney general ordered the seizure of properties of some figures in the al-Bashir regime.
On April 16, Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan, chairman of Sudan's Transitional Military Council (TMC), issued a decision to sack former Attorney General Omer Ahmed Mohamed Abdel-Salam and two other top prosecutors in the wake of the ouster of al-Bashir by the military. Mahmoud was named to replace Abdel-Salam as the new attorney general.
The reshuffle in the judicial system appeared to satisfy one of the top demands by the protesters who have been holding a massive sit-in in front of the army's headquarters in Khartoum since last April 6.
The TMC is tasked with running the country's affairs following the downfall of al-Bashir's regime. It has been negotiating with the protesters to form a joint council to run the country during the transition period. Enditem
