CARACAS, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Venezuelan judges have ordered the arrest of opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez after he joined in an attempted coup and violated his house arrest on Tuesday, the Supreme Court of Justice said on Thursday.

The court ordered Lopez to continue "serving his 13-year prison sentence."

Lopez was convicted for his responsibility in the violent protests in the country in 2014, which left more than 40 people dead.

Early Tuesday morning, Lopez appeared at a military base in eastern Caracas with opposition leader Juan Guaido, who urged Venezuela's public and military to take to the streets and help depose President Nicolas Maduro and his government.

"It's a public, notorious violation by Leopoldo Lopez of his house arrest, to appear and make statements to mass media outlets," the court said. Enditem
