LUSAKA, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Friday reiterated that the country was on course in its obligations to service its foreign debts and that there was no default.

Responding to reports in some international media that the country was facing a crisis of servicing its debts and may default due to economic challenges, Presidential Spokesperson Amos Chanda said the reports were malicious and meant to dent the country's image in the eyes of the international community.

He told reporters during a press briefing that despite the country facing some economic challenges, the finance minister was committed to ensuring that the country meets its debt obligations.

The government, he said, was taking measures to tackle challenges the country was facing but that it will always meet both its foreign and domestic debt obligations.

According to him, the finance ministry has been instructed to provide as much information as possible in order give the correct position about the country's debt position and to dispel the falsehood being peddled.

He further said the government has been very transparent in its debt mechanism, adding that the Zambian leader has full confidence in the treasury to tackle the current economic challenges. Enditem
