PARIS, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Marseille's hope of qualifying for next season's European competition was dealt with a huge blow as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Strasbourg in Ligue 1 on Friday.

Having played one more match, fifth-placed Marseille sit four points behind Saint-Etienne, who take up the spot for next season's Europa League. Saint-Etienne will visit Monaco on Sunday.

The first half saw few chances from both sides, with the closest coming from Marseille's Luiz Gustavo, but it was denied by goalkeeper Matz Sels.

Marseille managed to break the deadlock three minutes after the restart, as Hiroki Sakai teed up Valere Germain's curling shot from the edge of the box.

Strasbourg were awarded a penalty after Ludovic Ajorque was fouled from behind by Adil Rami inside the area midway through the second half. Although Jonas Martin's spot kick and Adrien Thomasson's followed-up header were both blocked by goalkeeper Steve Mandanda, Kenny Lala was on position to guide the ball into the net.

Strasbourg, who will feature in next season's Europa League qualifying round with their French League Cup title, sit ninth at the table.

Lyon will host Lille in Sunday's spotlight match of the 35th round as both teams are in contention for the French league's second position and automatic qualification into next season's Champions League group stage. Second-ranked Lille currently sit six points clear of Lyon. Enditem
