MADRID, May 5 (Xinhua) -- The 36th round of games in the Liga Santander saw two sides confirm their relegation to the second division, while Getafe strengthened their case for a place in next season's Champions League.

FC Barcelona rested their entire starting 11 from last Wednesday night's Champions League semifinal against Liverpool as they lost 2-0 away to Celta Vigo on Saturday.

Maxi Gomez's 67th minute goal put Celta ahead in a vital game in their fight to avoid relegation and Iago Aspas netted a penalty in the 88th minute to confirm Barca's third league defeat of the campaign.

Ousmane Dembele started for Barca, but the French international winger lasted just six minutes before leaving the field with a hamstring injury which could keep him out of action for the rest of the season.

Mariano Diaz scored twice as Real Madrid beat struggling Villarreal 3-2 in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Sunday.

Jesus Valleco netted Madrid's other goal after latching onto a deflection, while Gerard Moreno and Jaume Costa scored for the visitors, who still need a win in order to ensure they will be in the top flight next season.

Getafe beat Girona 2-0 to take a big step towards assuring fourth place and Champions League football for next season.

Jorge Molina opened the scoring and Angel Rodriguez added a second in the second half in a result which means Girona drop back into the bottom three after Valladolid's 1-0 win at home to Athletic Club Bilbao.

Waldo scored a 20th minute goal to take Valladolid to fourth from bottom and at the same time confirm Rayo Vallecano's relegation to the second division.

Rayo lost 4-1 away to Valladolid on Saturday as their defensive woes came back to haunt them again.

Jose Campana and Ruben Vezo put Levante 2-0 up by halftime and although Alvaro gave Rayo hope with a goal 20 minutes from time Levante sealed the win with late goals from Jason and Enis Bardhi as Rayo hurled players looking for an equalizer.

Huesca also saw their relegation confirmed on Sunday as they capitulated 6-2 at home to Valencia.

The game was over by halftime as Valencia led 5-0 with a goal from Daniel Wass after two minutes. Rodrigo Moreno scored in the 16th minute and Santi Mina netted after 20 and 32 minutes before Xabi Etxeita scored an own goal.

Rodrigo scored his second of the night seven minutes after halftime before Gonzalo Melero scored a 66th minute consolation for the home side and Alexandre Gallar netted a 92nd minute penalty.

Borja Iglesias scored twice as Espanyol defeated Atletico Madrid 3-0 to keep their hopes of playing in Europe next season alive.

Real Sociedad can still play in Europe next season after Manu Garcia's 24th minute own goal gave them a 1-0 win away to Alaves in the Basque derby.

The win takes Real Sociedad up to eighth in the table, while Alaves drop to 10th on the same number of points.

Eibar keeper Marko Dmitrovic was his side's hero as they beat Betis 1-0. Dmitrovic saved a penalty and kept Betis at bay with a series of saves in a game Eibar won thanks to Jose Angel 'Cote's' first goal for the Basque club.

Friday night saw Leganes ensure their survival with a 3-0 win away to Sevilla which also damages Sevilla's chances of finishing fourth.

Youssef En-Nesyri and Martin Braithwaite made it 2-0 in the first half and after withstanding Sevilla's attempts to draw level, Oscar scored a third goal with five minutes remaining. Enditem
