JAKARTA, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Dozens of the world's best surfers on Monday began competing in the third series of the World Surf League (WSL) in Indonesia's resort island of Bali.

A total of 56 surfers, 37 male and 19 female, will fight for the title from May 13 to 25 in the Keramas Beach of Gianyar district, Guntur Sakti.

Senior official with the Indonesian Tourism Ministry Ricky Fauziyani said that the appointment of Indonesia is a testament to the quality of its beaches.

"(The event was held in) Australia, then Indonesia, after that Brazil, South Africa, North America, France, Europe, and Hawaii. This suggests that Indonesia is a surfing destination of world class quality," he said.

Bali is the center of Indonesian tourism industry with about 800,000 foreign holiday makers visiting the tourist resort monthly, according to national statistics. Enditem
