40 parties in Greece to participate in European Parliament elections

ATHENS, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Forty parties will participate in the European Parliament elections which will take place on May 26 in Greece, according to the Supreme Court.
A total of 49 parties had registered, but nine failed to pay the required 3,000 euros (about 3,370 U.S. dollars) fee or to present a full list of candidates, the Supreme Court announced Sunday evening in a press release.
In 2014, a total of 43 parties took part in the elections and 27 in the 2009 ballot.
Greece has 21 seats to fill in the new assembly out of more than 700 deputies.
Greek conservatives of the main opposition New Democracy (ND) party are leading over the ruling leftist Syriza party in all recent opinion polls.
They are followed by the center-left Movement for Change (KINAL) and the ultra-Right Golden Dawn (Chryssi Avghi), while the last Greek party to pass the 3 percent of votes threshold will be the Greek Communist party KKE, according to the polls. Enditem
