WASHINGTON, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter is recovering from surgery Monday after breaking hip at his home in Plains, southeastern state of Georgia.
Carter, 94, fell while leaving to go turkey hunting Monday morning, according to a statement issued by The Carter Center, a non-profit organization that the former president founded in 1982.
He is "recovering comfortable form surgery to repair a broken hip" at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia, said the statement. "His surgeon stated that the surgery was successful. His wife Rosalynn, is with him."
"President Carter said his main concern is that turkey season ends this week, and he has not reached his limit. He hopes the State of Georgia will allow him to rollover the unused limit to next year," the statement added.
Incumbent U.S. President Donald Trump wished Carter a "speedy recovery."
"Wishing former President Jimmy Carter a speedy recovery from his hip surgery earlier today," Trump tweeted on Monday afternoon. "He was in such good spirits when we spoke last month - he will be fine!"
Carter, who served for one term between 1977 to 1981, became the longest-living U.S. president in March.
He oversaw the normalization of diplomatic ties between the United States and China 40 years ago.
The Georgia Democrat was diagnosed in 2015 with melanoma of brain and liver. He said months later that an MRI scan showed that his cancer was gone after treatment. Enditem
