Xinhua summary of Asia-Pacific stocks news at 1100 GMT, May 14

BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed lower Tuesday, with shares in agricultural industry leading the losses.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index went down 0.69 percent to 2,883.61. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.71 percent lower at 9,038.36.

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed higher Tuesday after falling for nine consecutive sessions.

Except IT that fell over 1 percent, all sectoral indices traded in the green. PSU Bank was the biggest gainer, surging over 3 percent.

The benchmark S&P, BSE Sensex closed at 37,218.53, up 227.71 points or 0.61 percent, compared to its previous close at 37,090.82.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand stock market went negatively on Tuesday after infrastructure investor Infratil said it would raise new equity to help fund its takeover of Vodafone New Zealand.

The S&P/NZX 50 Index fell 56.48 points, or 0.56 percent, to 10,070.35. Within the index, 29 stocks went down, 18 up, and three were unchanged. Turnover was 155.6 million New Zealand dollars.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended lower here on Tuesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,599.19 down 1.90 points or 0.12 percent, and the Emas was at 11,258.73 down 15.81 points or 0.14 percent.

SINGAPORE -- Singaporean stocks closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) going down 0.33 percent, or 10.57 points, to close at 3,223.71.

A total of 1.35 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 1.20 billion Singapore dollars (about 876.87 million U.S. dollars). Losers outnumbered gainers by 232 to 172.

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market closed on Tuesday with an increase of 0.52 percent compared to the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index increased by 4.14 points, reaching 804.73 points after closing.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 428.22 points, or 1.50 percent, to 28,122.02 points on Tuesday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 27,925.62 and 28,205.96. Turnover totaled 124.54 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 15.86 billion U.S. dollars).

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 105.7 points on Tuesday, up 0.08 percent from the previous trading session.

Over 37.2 million shares worth 524.9 billion Vietnamese dong (22.8 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Tuesday.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed lower on Tuesday for a seventh consecutive day as investors circumvented risks in heightened concerns about the outlook for the global economy.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 124.05 points, or 0.59 percent, from Monday to close the day at 21,067.23.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 1.23 percent lower on Tuesday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index decreased by 95.54 points to 7,646.66. The all-share index went down by 54.72 points, or 1.14 percent, to 4,736.54.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher Tuesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 2.83 points, or 0.14 percent, to settle at 2,081.84. Trading volume stood at 689 million shares worth 5.8 trillion won (4.9 billion U.S. dollars).

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market finished lower on Tuesday, despite a turnaround by materials and consumer staples which closed higher.
