MOGADISHU -- Somalia and the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) are intensifying joint operations against the al-Shabab terror group, said Francisco Madeira, special representative of the chairperson of the AU Commission for Somalia, on Tuesday.

The decision resulted from his talks with the Somali military held earlier in the capital Mogadishu. The two sides also agreed to strengthen information sharing in fighting the al-Shabab extremists, who control large parts of the rural southern and central Somalia. (Somalia-AMISOM-Terror)

MANILA -- Five New People's Army (NPA) rebels were killed and three government soldiers injured in a clash early on Wednesday morning in the central Philippines, an army spokeswoman said.

Army First Lieutenant Revella Roperos said the troops battled an estimated 30 fighters from the left-wing NPA guerrillas in Minautok villagein, Calatrava town in Negros Occidental Province around 5:30 a.m. local time, sparking a gun battle that lasted an hour.

"The firefight lasted for about an hour, after which the enemy scampered to different directions," Roperos said, adding that three soldiers suffered injuries "but are all still in good physical conditions." (Philippines-Clash)

LONDON -- British Prime Minister Theresa May confirmed Wednesday she still wants Britain to leave the European Union (EU), but she rejected a second referendum or remaining in the EU's customs union.

COLOMBO -- At least 78 people have been arrested over violent clashes which erupted in northwestern Sri Lanka earlier this week, the police said on Wednesday.
