LUSAKA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- A joint investigations team on Wednesday arrested a former Zambian minister for alleged abuse of authority of office.

Emmerine Kabanshi, who was fired last year as Minister of Community Development and Social Services at the height of a scandal involving misappropriation of funds meant to support the vulnerable people under a cash transfer scheme, was arrested by the joint investigative team after investigations.

The scandal resulted in some donors suspending funding to the scheme.

In a statement, the joint investigations team said the former minister did abuse her authority of office by unduly influencing the engagement of Zambia Postal Services, a state-run postal services firm, as payment service provider under the cash transfer program between Jan. 1 and Aug. 21, 2017.

The 54-year-old former minister also abused her authority of office by directing the extension of the services of postal services firm to include areas which were not covered in the initial contract, the statement said.

Kabanshi has since been placed on police bond and will appear in court soon, the statement added. Enditem
