LUSAKA, May 16 (Xinhua) -- The appreciation of different cultures and civilizations is not only a major part of human survival but also key to global peace and sustainable economic growth, Zambian development and cultural specialists have told Xinhua, referring to the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations (CDAC) held in Beijing.

Lawrence Banda, vice secretary general for Universal Peace Federation (Zambia Chapter) applauded China for taking a lead in promoting people-to-people exchanges.

He said that cultural diversity is important today in the face of globalization, and it plays a vital role in the realization of development goals.

He noted cultures and civilizations should be respected and protected, adding that African societies should work towards the enhancement of their respective cultures like the Asian counterparts.

According to Banda, the Asian countries, especially China, have very rich and well preserved cultures that help them stay focused.

"Culture, which is the glue that holds societies together, helps build relationships and social capital. It is worth noting that China has always been seen to promote culture diversity in many of its development undertakings," he said.

A Zambian traditions and culture specialist also lauded Asian countries' resolve to preserve their cultures.

Christopher Simasiku, Vice Chairperson at Kabwata Cultural Village, one of Zambia's heritage sites situated in the capital Lusaka, said Asian nations have done well in the area of advancing their cultures and appreciating other civilizations.

"That is perhaps one of the reasons why they register significant growth in almost all areas because they have greater understanding of the important role that culture plays in fostering development," Simasiku said. Enditem
